The Pig and Whistle is located on the main road running through Almancil. It has actually been in the same location with the same name since around 1980. As its name would suggest it was once a small English pub but has evolved into a restaurant and since Steve and Karen have been in charge an extremely good one.
The interior is charming, with low ceilings, candlelit tables and a small bar that gives the restaurant a Christmas grotto type feel. Our starters of Goats cheese and chicken liver parfait were both delicious and the presentation was excellent.
For mains we had the Argentinean fillet of beef and the daily special of monkfish and salmon on a bed of vegetables with a cream chive sauce. The whole mixture of flaovours in particular the salmon with the cream chive sauce was absolutely perfect. Finally for dessert, we had the profiteroles with chocolate sauce and ice cream and the Meringue with the creamiest ice cream and fruit, which was, out of all the restaurants I have dined in on the Algarve, the best dessert I have had.
For those lovely summer evenings the restaurant has a very nice patio terrace that is surrounded by planting and makes for the perfect setting to enjoy a dinner in the open air.
I can´t express how much I enjoyed myself at this meal, going in with no expectations I would thoroughly recommend the Pig and Whistle to anyone. It´s a perfect balance of fine food, fair prices and a friendly service.
